From the north - A3 motorway from Valena, in the direction of Braga A11 to Guimarães
Once in Guimarães: Leaving the toll-booth area of the motorway, you will come upon a round-about. Continue straight on, in the direction of the city. At the end of this road, follow the road signs indicating the Hospital. On your right, you will see the large Guimarães Shopping Centre. Continue straight on (no longer following the indications to the Hospital); the road is called Avenida Conde de Margaride. At the top of this avenue are traffic lights, and all traffic must turn right onto the Rua Paio Galvo street, in the direction of the lovely Praa do Toural square. Continue going straight on and quite soon there is, to the right, the Avenida Dom Afonso Henriques. Take this one-way street up to the Vila Flor Cultural Centre. It is very near the top of this avenue, on the left-and side. You may be able to see the Palace and the gardens approaching as you are driving up Avenida Dom Afonso Henriques.
For those of you arriving in Guimarães by rail, the Vila Flor Cultural Centre is 100 metres from the train station. Exit the station to your left and walk a very short distance until you reach the Avenida Dom Afonso Henriques, where you turn right.

The town of Guimarães
The birthplace of Portugal, the historic town of Guimarães, is considered "World´s Cultural Heritage" by UNESCO. An exceptionally well-preserved and authentic example of the evolution of a medieval settlement into a modern town, its rich building typology exemplifies the specific development of Portuguese architecture from the 15th to 19th century through the consistent use of traditional building materials and techniques.
The city hosts a plethora of cultural activities, the surrounding nature is gorgeous, and there are plenty of sites to visit. In 2012, Guimarães will be the European Capital of Culture. Equally worth a visit are the immediate surroundings, which include, for example, the city of Porto, the nature of the Peneda-Geres National Park or the sea and sand of beautiful beaches. Guimarães offers excellent hotels and restaurants in all categories, at very affordable prices.
Guimarães is easily reachable for international travelers, via the international airport of Porto, which is very well connected to the city of Guimarães. See
